Women’s Hike 2: Italian Dolomites

Women’s Dolomites Hike FAQs

  1. Where are we staying?
We will be based in chalets near the hotel in Canazei. The chalets are a short walk or quick transfer from the hotel and provide comfortable shared accommodation with showers, bedding and communal areas.

The finale meal on the last evening will take place at the hotel itself.

  1. What about food during the trip?
  • Breakfast: Provided each morning in the chalets.
  • On the trail: We will provide bread and toppings for participants to make sandwiches for the hike. We will eat on the move.
  • Participants should bring their own personal energy foods such as protein bars, nuts or gels.
  • The finale dinner is fully catered at the hotel.

  1. How difficult is the hike?
The route is classed as Medium difficulty. It is long rather than technical:
  • Total distance: between 22.4km and 23.9km
  • Ascent and descent: 940 metres each
  • Time on feet: up to 10-11 hours with a target time of 10 hours
  • You need a good level of fitness and the ability to walk for extended periods on uneven mountain paths.

  1. Do I need to be an experienced mountaineer?
No. The loop does not require climbing skills, but it does demand stamina, steady footing and mental resilience. Some sections follow well-known trails like the Friedrich August path with relatively small altitude changes.

  1. Where exactly does the hike start and finish?
  • Start: Rifugio Passo Sella
  • End: Linear descent into Canazei

  1. What are the highlights of the route?
Expect some of the finest scenery in the Dolomites:
  • Views of Punta Grohmann, Innerkofler Turm and the Tooth of the Sassolungo, all above 3000 metres
  • A glimpse of Alpe di Siusi, the largest plateau in Europe
  • Stops at iconic huts such as Rifugio Valentini, Rifugio Valentini Cecco, Rifugio Rodella and Rifugio Sassopiatto

  1. How fit do I need to be?
A good level of general fitness is essential. We recommend:
  • Ability to comfortably walk 25–30km in UK conditions
  • Regular cardio exercise before the event
  • No significant knee or ankle issues

  1. What should I bring?
  • Sturdy broken-in hiking boots
  • Waterproof jacket and warm layers, lots of sunscreen and a hat
  • Refillable water bottles, minimum 2 litres
  • Energy snacks for the hike
  • Personal medications and blister care

  1. What happens if weather changes?
The guide may adapt trails and rifugi stops to ensure safety while keeping to the circular plan.

  1. Do we need a medical form?
Yes – all participants must complete the general health declaration before travel.
